Two Cents On TristeFemme and LX

Here's my two cents on the TristeFemme and LX thingie.

Wah, see, Internet very power ah. Last time no internet how to do this kind of thing? Last time got no such thing as friendster, how to email (but see sidenote) all his friends to tell them what a bastard he is. You wouldn't even know all his friends, but now thanks to friendster you do!

And wah piang, got something to say just post on blogger.com and then someone will post on tomorrow.sg and let the whole of SIN know what a bastard he is.

The point is we're so connected it's scary. Here I am, sitting in UTAS, in a corner of the world but still I am in touch with this thing that is happening 7000 miles away in SIN.

But this is such a different world, a place unto itself. If I am not connected to this world, if I don't read blogs, if I don't visit tomorrow.sg, I would not even know of this even if I lived on the next street over.

Some points to I ponder:

  • Why take it down after it has raised such a hoo-haa? Scared already is it? Did the rule of unintended consequences play a part in this? Was this attention more than bargained for?
  • Why would an average Singaporean care about a angry, rich girl and a high and mighty SAF scholar? Life's a bitch and I can't even get mine in order.
  • What can the people in blogshpere do? Who are we to pass judgement on either one of them? Do we personally know either of them? All we have is what they have said and would that not be tainted and baised? Who are we to say that he lacks integrity or that she's just vindictive?
  • But it's an interesting social issue and worthy of discussion in a hypoethical sense.
  • Will this give Durex advertising ideas?
  • Scully this is just a experiment ran by some NUS social scientist.

We can empathise and sympathise but at the end of the day, the only resonable thing we can say about them is that they erred in their judgement. Well, poor kid.

Sidenote: But really, how do you email someone else's entire friend list at once? If it's your own you can use the Bulletin Board but if it's someone else's I think the only way is to send messages individually. I tried. It must be one very angry person to want to suffer through that.

Unrelated note: Graeme said in class on Thursday that Lindsay has resigned. The class was quite sad to hear that. Told Ee Wah later and she was like "What!" Prob pple playing politics again. Can't get away from that, even in academia where I hope they are smarter than the average person on the street.
