Software, impotence drugs, 419 scams, stocks...whatever happened to good old prono? Interesting enough, most of the spam is coming through my utas.edu.au account. One of my friends out there has spyware on their computer...or UTAS is to desperate for money that they are selling off students email addresses :)

PAP in NDP

From the NDP website:

People’s Action Party (PAP)

The People's Action Party has participated in every National Day Parade since the nation's first birthday in 1966. The party will be providing a 91-strong contingent led by Ms Penny Low, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. Founded in 1954, PAP's mission is to create a fair and just society where the benefits of progress are spread widely to all Singaporeans under a clean and honest government. Guided by its four core values of honesty, multiracialism, meritocracy, and self-reliance, the Party has won every General Election since 1959.

This has always bothered me. Why is PAP marching in the National Day Parade? Who gave them the honour and privilege of marching in the NDP? Which part of Total Defence do they represent?

I don't think the PAP should be in the National Day Parade at all. A case can be made for NTUC in that they represent the everyman (true or not is another matter and definitely worth a blog entry). The other civilian contigents tend to represent industry and thus Economic Defence.

But who does PAP represent? As a political party they cannot but represent themselves. To be in the National Day Parade, what does that say, especially when no other political body has a contingent? As idealistic as it may be, NDP should be politic-free, or at least politic-neutral.

IRA says armed campaign is over

IRA says armed campaign is over

And that is good, an end to one of the more meaningless armed conflict in history.

Strange Day

Strange day today. Went down for the weekly early Thursday morning spectacle of Lindsay giving his insights into "Strategic Issues in HRM" in between ranting about John Howard.

Today, he was jabbering mostly about the Faculty's top management. As usually he's mumbling, so I didn't quite catch what he was saying but apparently he had an issue with the assistant dean. Then less than an hour through the lesson, someone came in and took him away, promising us that the class will be rescheduled. Two of the full-time workers/part-time students had a problem with that cause it's quite a hardship for them to make any other times.

In their shoes, I wouldn't have argued. A waste of breath considering that Lindsay had already gone off.

Didn't know what the problem was but it seem related to the issue with the assistant dean. There was a police car and uni security around so must be pretty serious.

Since I now had a block of unexpectedly free time, walked to the city, to check out Dick Smith, OfficeWorks and Corporate Express for financial calculators. None under AUD50 so I'll keep using the one I borrowed from Yen. Walking back via Salamanca Place, noticed that there was a fire engine and a blackout. Strange. That's where I took my random picture of the day:

Thought the trees without leaves and Mt Wellington in the background makes a nice picture.

Hobart's a fantastically beautiful place; rural Tasmania and the National Parks even more so. I think I am happier here that if I had gone to anywhere on mainland Australia. Of course, I would have had different experiences, studied different units, known different people (hmmm...And maybe found someone to fall in love with??) but I am happy for the chances I had here to walk up mountains, experience bitingly-cold wind, get lost in alpine/semi-alpine/temperate rainforest terrain and drink from mountain steams. I'm not quite prepared to go back living in a big city just yet.

Remembered that it's Ee Wah birthday today and sent her an SMS: "O dear, almost 4got. Happy brithday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to Eeeee Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Happy brithday to you! :-) SMILE!"

Well, at least I made someone smile today.

Piangz...

From the WebCT discussion boards:

No need, dear. For the examples, all you have to do is tell some jokes. If the tutor like your jokes, she will give you high marks. Wah piangz...

Mamak Night

The Malaysian Student Society (UTAS is basically crawling with Malaysian students; go inside lecture theatre, throw one stone, 50% chance will hit a Malaysian) organised a Mamak Night down at the Ref Steps. Basically just set-up stalls selling Malaysian food.

I went down, not because of the food but because I figured it'll be pretty well attended and I'll just hang out there for awhile. Wanted to circulate around but ended up sitting down and chatting with Brian and Ee Wah and her sis for most of the time. They'd never met before but since they'll all from KL...

It did turn out to be a pretty nice evening, with two of my best friends here.

And now I realise, this must be the first uni event that I attended that didn't involve alcohol.

I'm glad I went down :)

I Wonder

Accommodation Services organised a trip to the skating trip rink last night. Grace and boyfriend Sam was there. They sure as hell don't act like a couple. I wonder what's going on.

Was my first time ice-skating too. Didn't fall too often. It's easy to keep my balance but not easy to get moving. Now little-used muscles are aching. But isn't ice skating supposed to be effortless? I wonder.

A Rainbow

Walking up Kelly Steps, on the way back from the city, in the slightest of drizzles. A rainbow.

Grrrr.....

Grrrr....so angry....

It has been my misfortune to got to know Grace. She is soooo co-dependent and can't seem to do anything for herself.

Of course everybody's blur when they first get here but not going for lectures simply because she doesn't know where the LT is and can't be bothered to find it, not going for tutorials because she didn't do the questions (as a result of not have the tutorial questions as a result of not attending the lectures). She asked me to show her where the Unicen LT is (the heart of the Uni and she can't find it) but she was 15 mins late and in the end made two other people late as well. I don't know what to say.

I wonder how she's gonna make it.

I just took her to look for the geology LT cos she has a lesson there (which she didn't attend cos she didn't know where that was), got a business law book for her from the Law Library so she has some reference material for the Commercial Transaction unit, showed her how to put money into her printing account, how to borrow books from the library (!) and how to use the photocopy machine (!!).

And now "since u go 2 comm building now pls find me a second hand book 4 business law if u can ,if u cant make it,it's alrite.Jz call 2 d room if u can find any.Thank"

I guess it's a good thing I met her cos I don't think she would have gone around on her own doing such things but I wouldn't help her look for a book; I think I had enough. Just don't know what to say about her.

Formal Dinner

Just finished the first formal dinner of the semester. It wasn't too bad. Chicken and mash, desert was fantastic even though I still don't know what it's called.

A Beautiful Day

Today's a beautiful day...
